A proud native Washingtonian, the youngest elected Latino official in DC history, & a proven progressive leader — Walter Deleon has spent years fighting for DC residents, both here in Ward 5 and across the District.
The son of two immigrants from Guatemala, Deleon made his foray into politics as an intern for Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells in High School. Throughout the 2014 primary election season, Deleon ran a highly successful voter registration drive throughout various DC schools, registering over 200 high schoolers in a three month period.
On November 4th, 2014 at age 18, Deleon was elected as Commissioner for 5C02 with 92% of the vote and became the youngest elected official in District history.
Deleon worked as DC Coordinator for Martin O’Malley’s Presidential campaign & served on the Governor’s leadership team. He also worked as Ward 5 Coordinator for Councilmember Robert White’s campaign.
Deleon currently serves on the DC Latino Caucus Executive Board & is President of DC College Democrats.
Walter attended DC Public Schools as a child, graduated from Washington Latin Public Charter School, and is a 3rd year student at The University of the District of Columbia.
