Statement on the “Local Resident Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2015”

I am pleased that my Councilmember’s committee has finally found the time to review Councilmember David Grosso’s bill – the Local Resident Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2015 which would enfranchise roughly 53,975 permanent resident immigrants who reside legally in Washington, DC.

Co-introduced by Councilmembers Allen, Nadeau, Evans and Silverman, this bill would allow D.C. residents who are not U.S. citizens but have permanent residency status to vote in municipal elections. These persons might not be American by birth, but they are as Washingtonian as you and me.

These persons might not be American by birth, but they are as Washingtonian as you and me.

To deny the 53,975 permanent resident immigrants in the District of Columbia the right to vote is wrong. Now’s the time to allow their voices to be heard in our municipal elections. It’s the moral thing to do.
