When I tell people that I’m running for office, I often get asked what position I’m running for. When I say an ANC Commissioner, they often ask “what’s an ANC Commissioner?” or “What exactly is an ANC?” Well, the answer to those questions lies below.
What’s an ANC?
Washington, D.C. is divided into eight Wards. All eight Wards are each subdivided into areas represented by an elected government body called an Advisory Neighborhood Commission. Each Commission is made up of ANC Commissioners, who represent a Single Member District (or SMD). A SMD is a subdivision of an ANC, and typically consists of 2,000 residents.
What does an ANC do?
Advisory Neighborhood Commissions are meant to be the voice of the communities they represent. While they consider issues like traffic and parking issues, street improvement and safety, and sanitation and trash collection, ANCs hold a lot of clout when it comes to new development and liquor licenses.
