Earlier today, Commissioner Deleon stood alongside DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and Police Chief Cathy Lanier as they announced a new drug enforcement strategy on Monday. Bowser’s office says the police department will focus more of its attention on suppliers who feed dangerous narcotics into the communities, and shift away from out-dated tactics focused on low-level users.
Mayor Bowser also announced emergency legislation that gives the Metropolitan Police Department and the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs enhanced authorities to crack down on the sale of synthetic drugs. In addition, the District’s Department of Health (DOH) will use its surveillance system to allow hospitals to report to the DOH when an individual arrives with issues related to synthetic drug use.
